Self-taught, David Lanzmann is a director, screenwriter, cameraman, editor and producer.
He is also a pianist and played in a funk band for several years, notably collaborating with Mudbone, the legendary singer of George Clinton's band Parliament. He made his film debut in 1996 with his first short film Bancal, which met with critical acclaim and was sold to France 2 for Jacques Perrin's show La 25ème heure.
He achieved worldwide recognition with the 26-minute medium-length film Dirty Socks.
Shot for 800 euros in two days, he is responsible for the direction, the camera, the lighting, the editing and the music.
The film was pre-nominated for the Oscars and received numerous selections and awards at major festivals.
In 2005, he mounted his first production, Les films de la Gaïole.
He signed his first feature film Doo Wop, which he produced, wrote, edited and directed.
For the occasion of this film, he leaves without an appointment to meet the musician he has always dreamed of working with, Prince.
At the end of Prince's the concert , he manages to talk to him and gives him Doo Wop, on DVD.
He asks Prince for the synchronization rights to one of his songs, something the singer has never agreed to in his entire career for a European film. Prince approves the film and accepts.
This was the beginning of a working relationship between the two, which led David Lanzmann to film him in concerts.
Doo Wop was selected at ACID in Cannes as well as in Karlovy Vary, Mannheim, Tiburon...
It toured festivals, won several awards including FIPRESCI and was released in several countries.
Following this first film, David Lanzmann refocused on writing. He collaborated with the Cesar winners screenwriters.
Alain Le Henry (Diabolo Menthe, Watch the men fall...) and Jacques Fieschi (Nelly and Mr. Arnaud, Lost Illusions Sentimental Destinies ) with which he wrote two films.
At the same time, he films numerous artists in concert, including Bootsy Collins, Larry Graham, Jean-Michel Jarre and Prince,
notably in Paris for his legendary concert at the Grand Palais in October 2009.
In 2016, accompanied by actress Caroline Ducey (click here for link in page contact), they went to New York to try to obtain, for the first time,
from the Strasberg family, the rights to adapt the intimate writings of Marilyn Monroe, Fragments.
They leave with the agreement and decide to adapt it for the theater.
Caroline Ducey is responsible for selecting the texts. David Lanzmann directs and composes the music with Fred Sachs.
Alone on stage, Caroline Ducey is accompanied by David Lanzmann on piano and Fred Sachs on guitar. The play has been performed more than 100 times in Paris and for two years at the Avignon Off.
Along with Caroline Ducey, they remain the only ones today to have the Strasberg family's agreement to adapt the book.
In 2020, he directed his second feature film, Wild Days, produced by Julien Madon (click here for link in page contact).
The film was ready for release, but the pandemic put the cinema on hold.
It will be released April 19th 2023 and be selected for numerous festivals, including Angoulême.
In 2023, he created a new production company 21films which is also a film distributor and music label.
He is currently preparing his third feature film, What's left to be, still produced by Julien Madon.
At the same time, he produced music videos and numerous TV films and series for French television, including TF1, France 2 and M6.
